Stanford University School of Earth Science

Computing Facilities

In addition to University-provided computer resources, the School of Earth Sciences provides resources solely for students, faculty, and staff within the School:
  • GRID Lab: This computer lab has both Macs and PCs running applications like ArcGIS, ENVI, Matlab, Femlab, the Adobe Creative Suite, and Microsoft Office. CD/DVD burners, scanners, printers, and 2 large format plotters are also available.

  • A-65 Computer Classroom: For use by all faculty and students in Earth Sciences, the classroom features 20 PCs, a screen sharing system, and a projector screen. When not scheduled for a class the room is available for drop-in use.

  • A Geographical Information Systems (GIS) lab is maintained in Branner Library, and is available for students and researchers. This includes GIS hardware, software and data sets as well as technical support and consultations.

  • The Center for Computational Earth & Environmental Sciences (CEES) provides capacity in state-of-the-art hardware and computational methods. Students are allowed to register for accounts to begin utilizing the cluster.

  • A fully-switched fast ethernet computer network with jacks in every office and laboratory connecting about 1000 computers to each other and the Internet.

  • A fast network server, pangea, for e-mail, web page hosting, network file storage and printer sharing, and general time-sharing computing.

  • An IT support team to maintain the School's computer resources and assist users.

In addition, departments and research groups within the School maintain specialized computing facilities, such as clustered computing networks for intensive computational work. Researchers can also get access to facilities at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC).
